Tutorial: How to customise unordered list

Sometimes we need to make a list of something. It doesn't matter what it is, it could be the things you plan to do tomorrow, or 7 things you like about your partner. However at times we do get bored of the same old bullet-style list and we want to see something a little creative. So, how are we going to do it?

First of all, we need to spiff up the stylesheet (CSS). Open up your stylesheet file, or if you are using Blogger, just open your HTML file and look for this piece of code. If you don't have it, now it's time to add it to your stylesheet.

ul { list-style-type: bullet; }

(ul refers to unordered list.) Replace bullet with other styles, for example square or circle.

You might also want to use your own image as the bullet so this is how you do it: Replace the bullet with the link to the image that you want to use instead:

ul { list-style-image: url('URLofimagehere') ; }

But what if we want to assign two or more bullet styles to the list? This is when classes come in handy.
Say if you want to create a checklist and some of the items in the list have been fulfilled or completed so you want a tick to appear next to the list instead. So how do we do it?
We will then need to determine the default bullet style, in this example we will use an empty box emptybox.

ul { list-style-image: url('URLoftheemptybox'); }

Now it's time to write the code for the list style that uses a tick tickbox instead of the circle. We create a class called 'tick' for items that have been completed or achieved.

ul li.tick { list-style-image: url('URLforthetickbox'; }

Now that we are done styling the CSS, it's time to show off what we have done. We will create a list of, in this example, my wishlist which composes of:

<ul>
<li>A digital camera</li>
<li>A new phone</li>
<li>5 books</li>
<li>Graduate with flying colours</li>
</ul>

They will appear like this on the web page:
List

So if I have achieved/obtained some of the things in the list, say the camera and the books, I will modify my codes to look like this:

<ul>
<li class="tick">A digital camera</li>
<li>A new phone</li>
<li class="tick">5 books</li>
<li>Graduate with flying colours</li>
</ul>

And we will achieve this:
