A lot of people seem to have a misconception on what a blog or website review is. A blog/website review is when a blog or website is subjected to be analysed and rated by someone (or even a group of people). Usually a blog review (or reviews on blogs/websites) should include a few things such as these:
  • First impressions
  • Navigation
  • Coding and validation
  • Content
  • Design
  • Browser compatibility
  • Errors
  • Overall opinion

  • However, these days I find people doing segments (or episode) on blog review. To be frank, I was curious as to what this 'segment' is supposed to entail. Apparently these so-called 'blog review segments' are no more than where a blog owner compiles a list of other blogs (usually submitted by readers) and merely visit those blogs. Of course, there are also blog owners who compile a list and then post on their blogs a line or two about the blogs they visit. However this still does not qualify as a blog review. How can anyone review a blog and sum up the entire review in one short sentence such as "Your blog is neat and pretty"? How does that qualify as a review? Might as well change the name to 'blog-viewing segment' instead of 'blog review segment'. The two words 'view' and 'review' are not the same, mind you. The Free Dictionary gives the definition (one of the many definitions) of review as: 'To examine with an eye to criticism or correction' or 'To look over, study, or examine again.'

According to Wisegeek, there are three types of blog review, the first one is a "type that rates blogs - [is] designed to help users find the best blogs of the type they are seeking and/or avoid blogs that are poorly written, not kept up, or overrated." So this type is where reviewers will pick blogs and give their opinions about the blogs.

The second type is the blog of an affiliate marketer. He/she will review products/services and hoping that readers will buy the products through their personal links. Normally this type of reviewers are being paid for their reviews. If that is so the case, reviewers are expected to disclose to their readers the fact that they are being paid for the reviews on the basis of ethical reasons.

The last type is the blog reviews done by a critic. For example, a blog owner may have the passion for reading, hence the person will review the books that he/she have read and make analytical comments about the book contents. This, of course, is not restricted to books only. It can be reviews on movies, food, etc.

Here are a few examples of blog reviews which I have done in the past:
    http://amalina.org/review/dustywings.php
    http://amalina.org/review/cheapstranger.php
    http://amalina.org/review/revenant.php

Where can you get your blogs/websites to be reviewed?
Some individuals (such as me) offer website/blog review services on their blogs/websites but there are also communities (such as Rev.iew.me)which exist to provide these services.

Lastly, a question for all of you:
Before reading this article, what did you understand by blog review?

Yup, I saw some blogs are doing their blog review but not from 'head to toes'.. All I can see is just a simple word such as 'nice, clean and creative'..

Maybe someday I'll let you doing a review on my blog :)

Will be looking forward to that day. :)

I wish people would write more about this as you have done. This is something that is very important and has been largely overlooked by the internet community

yeah, i agree with you. there's a lot of segment like that out there. they also make a term of conditions like must follow their blog, twitter and whatsoever that need more followers and like.

and when it comes to the reviewing, the just made some list of the contestants like from 1-20 and then they just blogwalking, not following back or make some review about the blog.

to make the segment looks benefit, they will make a page/navigate button for the list of blog that enter their segment. i'm glad that you made this post and i hope that people should be aware with this :)

Thanks for commenting Eryn. Yeah I agree with you. People should understand what it means by blog review. Sometimes, one people makes a 'segment' and then everybody else follows and does the same thing without even realising if they're doing the right thing. :/
