I haven't posted any tutorials or articles for quite some time so in this post, I'll show you how to display Blogger blog post archives using dropdown menu. This tutorial is really easy, all you need to know is how the dropdown menu works, and then stick in the Blogger archive codes.

Step 1
As usual, save your template before attempting this.

Step 2
Then open up your text editor and type out this code:

<select onChange="location.href=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;">
<option value=""></option>
</select>

The onChange attribute's value is set that way so that when an item is selected from the list, it will automatically opens to the selected link.

Step 3
Right, it's time to include the Blogger archives code.

<Bloggerarchives>
<a href="<$BlogArchiveURL$>"><$BlogArchiveName$></a>
</BloggerArchives>

The above code will automatically generate a list of Blogger posts, however, we want the list to be placed within a dropdown menu. So we will put the code above into the codes in Step 2.

<select onChange="location.href=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;">
<Bloggerarchives>
<option value="<$BlogArchiveURL$>"><$BlogArchiveName$></option>
</BloggerArchives>
</select>

Now all you need to do left is to copy and paste this code where you want it to appear.

Hi,

This tag works perfectly!

However, I just would like to ask what codes I can use to change the design of the dropdown menu? Perhaps change the border, font, etc.

Thanks so much!

@Jessica, you can stylise the dropdown menu by adding this to the CSS section:

(This is an example, you can stylise it any way you like)

select {
color: #000;
background-color: #ffccff;
font-size: 12px;
}
option {
color: #ffc000;
background-color: #bbb;
font-size: 12px;
}

Hi, is there a way to do this with static pages, rather than blog posts?

@Hannah, yes it should work with pages as well.

Thank youuuuu :)

I tried I am getting error :
Error parsing XML, line 2526, column 18: The value of attribute "value" associated with an element type "option" must not contain the '<' character
How to resolve this?

@Ganesh, this tutorial is for the Classic Blogger version. To use this, you must make sure your Blogger is using the classic version. You can change this in the Layout section and scroll to the bottom and there's a link that says Revert to classic template. However this will change your layout.

Thank you so much!

Hi, is there a way to make the newer month first/ closest to the drop down menu.

@Esther, you can this code to reverse the order of the archive date:

<select onchange="location.href=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;">
<option>View archive</option>
<script type="text/javascript">
var archives = new Array();
<BloggerArchives>
archives[archives.length] = new Array('<$BlogArchiveURL$>', '<$BlogArchiveName$>');
</BloggerArchives>
for (var i=archives.length-1;i>=0;i--) {
document.write('<option value=\"' + archives[i][0] + '\">' + archives[i][1] + '</option>');
}
</script>
</select>

@kitty Thanks!

Hi!
May I ask how to add the blog post tittle at the archive?
